Tanger October 2018
This is a very large marina, still under development. Apparently part of a 7 billion USD plan to develop the waterfront with hotels, apartments, restaurants and entertainment in addition to the port and marina. Soft launch this fall, and from 2019 they will start advertising for it.

Extremely good price, 10 euro for my 34 foot sailboat.

Electricity and water included on all berths. Since we were sent to a platoon for larger yachts they actually sent an electrician to change the adapter on our electricity cable for free.

Facilities (toilet, shower) are good, but it seems like the accessd card solution is still being implemented so one of the many marina staff and/or security guards will let you in.

The reception quay are on the port side just after entering the marina. It is room for 4-5 yachts. Here you deal with the marina office, police and customs. They are all friendly and the paperwork can take as little as 15 min (NB! Drones need to be registered and kept by the police while you are in Tangier). It seems that they already have scaled for a much larger number of yachts then what is arriving this fall.

The guys working in the marina are superhelful and friendly – and also very willing to learn at this point. There are people speaking en english, french, spanish ++, but I´d recommend to double check agreements with the english-speaking people in the marina as we almost had one of the guys throw away out clothes, when we were looking for laundry, as result of miscommunication.

Also the city, especially the medina and the kashba are very worth a visit. Be prepared to negotiate prices, and start at a bout ⅕. The initial face expression of them being insulted, are only part of the negotiation game – and you’ll find yourself able to walk away with a good deal, still being friends.

We are currently staying at the New Tanja Bay Marina. Staff are super friendly and helpful in tying up alongside, albeit I am not sure how much experience they have with mooring boats so we changed all the lines ourselves after they left. They are really eager though, so as the marina gets busier I am sure they will get better at this. There are currently only a handful of boats here. The WiFi is not great, but free and better than any we have had in any of the Marinas in Spain (although that may be due to there being so few boats using it). The formalities with immigration took maybe 15 minutes, we had no boat inspection from the police. We are paying Euro 20 a night for a 14 metre boat including water and electricity. The marina is really sheltered, right in town, a short walk to a Carrefour supermarket and also the Old Town and Medina. Very secure, there are security guards 24/7 patrolling. We have had a great stay here, cool city, very friendly smiling people can highly recommend. I am breastfeeding at the moment and have had no issues at all with doing so in public.

I can confirm that the new Marina in Tangier is open and operational. We stayed there 1 night 25/7/2018 in our 29ft sailboat. The new Marina is really nice, there were not that many boats when we were there, mostly big yachts. I think they had been open for a couple of weeks. The whole area felt secure and staff was friendly and helpful. Had water, power, shower and wifi. Paid 10EUR a night. Had a really good stay, no problems.

A new marina has been build but is not open or operational yet. The only berths for yachts are in front of the navy vessels inside the SE breakwater opposite the old Yacht Club. Charges are 250 Dhuram per night for a 13 m yacht, plus electricity and water of 50 Dhuram per night. Mooring is in the middle of nowhere, oily and not comfortable in a westerly breeze.

Customs and Immigration are very helpful and of short duration, ie paperwork took less than an hour, and the same for clearing out. No showers or toilets. Internet SIM card bought for 11GB for 30 days for 110 Dhurams in the Kasba, fantastic value and worked at breakneck speed anywhere in Marocco. Kasba well worth a visit pretty good value for veg etc.

Tangier is a dreadful harbour, noisy and busy with lots of movement from fishing boats racing in and out of the harbour all day and night. No facilities for yachts basically. Moored alongside a concrete wall with a tide of approximately 2 mtrs – you need plenty of fenders. No electricity, no showers or toilets, no water. Price a night is DRH 248. Considering the facilities a ridiculous price.
Formalities take approx two hours but all very friendly.
The town on the other hand is probably worth the bad conditions, and well worth a visit. The old Medina is only a 15 minute walk from the harbour. Tangier is clean with a big soukh and Medina. No hassle at all, although they want to sell you the usual things they are not not very persistent in doing so. Not a lot of tourists.

Just returned (july 23-25) from a 2 days/nights visit to Tanger with our older Jeanneau Sunfizz (40 ft).

First time ever in Africa, and in a Muslin country therefore even more of an eye opener if not to say, as above, a shock but not shocking
The harbour reconstruction is ongoing and as they demolish parts the remaining space becomes ‘high density ‘ ! As reported before, you come in hoping to find a spot but will be directed to go along the pilot boats behind the semi retired ferryboat “Comrit” , across the harbour . Easy to locate and get to. Until early afternoon, you will get sincere help for the guys taking care of the pilot boats. Then to add to the experience, you will have to walk around the back of the fishing hangars atw to the remaining marina/police white building for formalities. They will stamp your passports and hand them back but retain ship docs until departure. Did not hire someone to guard our boat but tipped those helping us upon arrival. Never felt harrassed nor intimidated. We did not hire a guide to explore medina but limited our visit during day time. Ferry loads of tourists come during the day, from Spain, making our presence more casual. Felt safe within the first day. Of course with usual precaution. The shock comes from we being first timers in an African Muslin Kingdom.
BTW, the Morroccans openly love their King, but criticise their government administration….like everywhere in the wolrd I guess
once the new marina becomes operational with its guards and gates, and rates, , and the fishing fleet is relocated, it will be a breeze to go to Tanger, but most of the authenticity will be out of site.
Go now, expect some anxiety at first but also get the reward, and the feeling that you are a bit of an adventurer
