Description:
Mazatlán is described as one of Mexico’s most alluring and inviting beach destinations. Over the past decade, the ‘Pearl of the Pacific’ has breathed new life into its historic centre, and the ongoing renewal program continues to bear fruit. The result is something truly unique: a historic city with a resplendent colonial district only a short walk from a 20km-long crescent of sandy beach.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
While Mazatlan has a big industrial harbor, the marinas are located in an estuary to the north of the city. It is best to enter the channel leading to the marinas at high tide and slack tide, due to strong currents - up to 4 kts - and shallow depths.
If coming here for fuel, the easiest fuel dock to access is El Cid, but beware of shallow water - depths have been measured at 8ft at zero tide. When entering stay close to the wall. There will possibly be a dredge on the wall inside so stay very close. Once beyond the dredge, depths open up a little. Visiting cruisers suggest checking your slip depth at the marinas.
Following the impact of recent hurricanes, cruising boats heading south this winter should be aware of debris in the water, missing navigation marks, hurricane damage to docks and limited berth availability. Cruiser Highlights:
Cruisers report Mazatlan to have a great sailing community.
The Morning Cruiser’s Net is an excellent source of information. The Net is conducted each morning, Monday through Saturday, at 08:00 on VHF Channel 72. Should you need help, someone listening is likely to have useful information or a suggestion as to where and how to resolve your need.
The Marina Mazatlan produces a Cruiser's Guide which contains detailed information for the cruising community here.
