Lumut - General Info
Where is Lumut?:
Lumut is a coastal town and district in the state of Perak, Malaysia. It is about halfway between Singapore and Langkawi on Malaysia’s west coast and is the home of the Malaysian Navy as well as a gateway to Pangkor Island, with ferries departing from its jetty for island trips.
It’s located southwest of Ipoh, the state capital, and offers local markets, mangrove tours, and naval base attractions, serving as a popular spot for island hopping and water sports.
Entrance Notes and Cautions for Lumut:
Contact the marina on VHF channel 69 for assistance if berthing at the marina and follow the ferry route. As this is the home port of the Royal Malaysian Navy, keep an eye out for navy vessels.
Take care in the approach as shoals surround the entrance. It is recommended to let the marina know ahead of time when you plan to arrive and update them as you approach. It is safer to arrive during daylight when the tide is not low. The dock staff will typically escort you into the marina or anchorage area (away from the ferries’ path) if you give them notice. Space inside the marina is tight, so be prepared.
Cruiser Highlights for Lumut:
Nestled in between Pangkor Island and the Royal Malaysian Navy’s headquarters, Pangkor Marina is a convenient place to stop when travelling the Malacca Strait to or from Thailand. It provides great shelter for both wet and dry berthing. Excellent local restaurants and stores, a chandlery at the marina and lots of tradespeople for repairs and maintenance.
Position:

Pangkor Marina, Marina Island, Lumut – Boatyard Feedback
Just spent 4 months getting the boat painted inside & out. Their sealift is good for catamarans & monohulls.
The work was done by Prestige Marine services, otherwise known as Jimmy. Good job all around & very happy with end result at a fair price.
Phone: +60 019 5741 398
The marina staff couldn’t do enough to help Jimmy and us.
Entry ferries run regularly & they draw 2.2m & run at all tides, so wait at the start of the entrance then follow them in.
Accommodation – super clean in Lumut. 1 bedroom studio rm850 a month + electricity at rm400 a month – then you need a car to get around.
Biminis as well, but make sure he knows the standard you require. Best give him the old one to copy the method of construction. Specify Tenara thread (15yrs), if not you get 2-5yrs.
A good place to work on or store your vessel
