Entrance:
It is advisable to keep at least 0.5NMs offshore until the entrance has been identified. There are outlying rocks just south of the entrance and off the root of the breakwater
Harbour Information:
The inside of the breakwater is used primarily by fishing and tourist boats but there is usually space for a few yachts with bollards and ladders every 20m or so.
The post office is in the building by the harbor gates Tel: (+34) 922 805 476). There is water on the quay.
Anchoring:
It is also possible to anchor in the bay south of the harbor in 8 to 12m, in the sand, with good holding. Open to the west and subject to gusty winds caused by the high cliffs, this anchorage is beautiful but does tend to suffer from the swell. When the swell is excessive permission can be sought to anchor in the outer harbor but the holding is reported to be poor. It is advisable to anchor well outside the harbor entrance to ensure sufficient sea room for the ferry which is a catamaran.
Getting ashore, it is advisable to avoid a beach landing (unless conditions are very calm) and instead takes your dinghy into town – to the left of the rocky beach just under the cliffs.

We anchored here in Nov. 2018. Holding was good despite strong north wind. Tucked right in near the beach, there is good protection from the north wind. Landing on the beach in swell is difficult, but on the inner harbour wall is no problem. Anchoring direct under such huge cliffs is a bit “Norway feeling”. The hardware store that sells fishing tackle has lots of stock, is helpful and speaks English. Biggest shop is Spar right at the end of town.

We stopped over at Puerto de Vueltas in La Gomera and anchored several nights in November 2017 before leaving for Sal in the Cape Verdes. The anchorage was beautiful with high cliffs. It could get a bit rolly at times, but in a catamaran, it wasn’t bad.
There were many boats anchoring here – seemed to be a popular stopover for people on their way to the Cape Verdes.
Holding seemed to be good.
There is a rocky beach just under the cliffs that we took the dinghy up to a few times and it was okay when it was really calm, but if there was any surf it was extremely difficult to walk up on the rocks. It’s better to take your dinghy in towards the town, to the left of the beach. There is a place where you can tie your dinghy there and go ashore to explore. The restaurant by the dock has decent wifi.
There are a few small grocery stores in the town, but don’t plan on doing any provisioning here – do all of that before you get here.
There is a small hardware store in town that sells fishing gear and a few small boat supplies. Go for a hike – I think it was called Kings Valley. There are beautiful views.
