We just had to stay in Xcalak for 6 days, while coming from Belize heading to Isla Mujeres. The Harbourmaster is very friendly and speaks excellent English. The people in town are very friendly.
We were anchoring in front of the XTC Dive Base and docked our dinghy at their dock. They were all very friendly and helpful. They offer trips to Banco Chinchorro for diving and snorkelling.

If you’re not sure about the entrance of the reef called the harbourmaster. Very often if the locals see a yacht in front of the reef, they come out to guide you in.
We can recommend this place for a stop before and after Belize. We couldn’t check incoming from Belize, but after the Harbourmaster checked our Papers we were allowed to go ashore.

The safe depth in the reef entrance is about 8ft, but we saw a little more, while we came in, maybe because of the tide. Drop the anchor near the two boats (A dive boat and a fishing boat) which are anchored at moorings. The holding there is good.

Majahual has replaced Xcalak at the port of entry at the south end of Mexico’s east coast. Majahual is larger, has a big dock, anchorage inside the reef, plus Port Capt, Migracion, Aduana for clearing in and out of Mexico. Also has a Navy dock.
NOTE: Nearby, at the beautiful offshore Banco Chinchorro, the anchorage and moorings at Cayo Norte are no longer open for yachts. The Navy uses this area for drug interdiction.
