Security for Yachts in Fiji

Overall Crime & Safety

Fiji is generally a safe country, however, theft and assault have been reported by locals and tourists alike, with most occurring at night and in urban areas.

Maritime Issues

Generally Fiji is regarded as a safe country for cruisers, however, it is troubling that in some of the larger cities crime against yachts has been reported in recent years. Sadly it seems that the days of leaving your yacht open when ashore and at night, are over. Cruisers should adopt sensible security precautions (including properly securing your dinghy and outboard at all times) and be sure to ask a neighboring boat to keep an eye on your home if going ashore.

Cruisers are being advised to make sure they follow all the correct procedures and guidelines for entering Fiji to ensure their security and safety, in the face of escalating drug trafficking in the South Pacific region.

Specific Areas of Concern

Take extra precaution at night in downtown Suva and also in Savusavu when on a mooring or at anchor.

In 2023 reports came to light of theft and burglary from yachts moored in Savusavu including a serious assault on an elderly cruiser.  However, according to recent cruiser reports, crime in Savusavu seems to have settled and the Police have opened a small central town Station resulting in more active policing in the area. They also have a new Police launch which is moored at Copra Shed.

Reported Incidents

Security reports from cruisers in the past few years have mainly come from Savusavu and concerned pickpockets, yacht burglaries; dinghy and outboard theft, the latter also being reported at Denarau and Lautoka.

Attacks on cruisers are infrequent, but have occurred in January 2017 in Suva, (when a long-term Fiji cruiser was attacked in his cockpit when he intercepted two men with machetes who boarded his boat at night with robbery in mind) and in Savusavu in January 2018 and October 2023 when long term cruisers were attacked and robbed.  There have been no incidents reported to Noonsite since 2023.
