Where is Niuatoputapu Island?

This small island lying some 175 miles north of the main Tongan island group is a convenient port of entry into the Kingdom of Tonga for yachts arriving from the north.  About 800 people live here with about 50 more on the nearby island of Tafahi.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Niuatoputapu Island

Navigation of the 30 metre wide pass on the north west side of the island is not difficult due to well placed buoys and an accurate leading line.    After the last buoy pair, various shallows on the way to the wharf in Falehau are indicated by sticks and signs.  Pass them on the correct side.  They lead to the anchorage area off the concrete wharf.  Cruisers report little current and a tidal range of about 1.5 metres.
