Suriname Security for Yachts

Overall Crime and Safety

Statistically, Suriname is a safe country. The biggest risk is opportunist petty theft like pickpocketing and locals offering you services under pressure for "tips". In the city centre of Paramaribo, after dark, you may feel a little uncomfortable in some areas.

Maritime Issues

The Suriname River should be be approached carefully as it carries a great deal of debris. Yachts have reported anchors becoming entangled in debris and yachts dragging and colliding with others in the Domburg River anchorage.

In August 2014, fishermen in and around the Corentyne River (which is the border between Guyana and Suriname) reported being violently attacked by pirates and losing anchors and fishing gear. It is not known if this area should still be avoided.
