Suriname FAQs

Pre-Arrival Boat: The Maritime Authority Suriname (MAS) require 48 hours notice of arrival. See Clearance for details.
Pre-Arrival Crew: An Entry Fee Voucher (EFV) must be applied for and paid for online prior to arrival. If you require an E-Visa, this also must be obtained in advance. See Immigration for details. Where can I enter? While Immigration formalities must be completed in the city of Paramaribo, a new government rule does not allow yachts to anchor near the town, so all visiting yachts must proceed directly upstream to Domburg, or beyond, and travel to Paramaribo from there.
Are fees high to enter by yacht? Fees are low. There is an entry permit fee and visa admin. charge. See Fees for details.
What security concerns should I know about? Suriname is a safe country, however the dangers of the debris in the Suriname River should not be underestimated.

Suriname Facts for Sailors

  • Suriname is a country on the NE Atlantic coast of South America. It is bordered by French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west and Brazil to the south. A member of CARICOM, it is considered to be a culturally Caribbean country.
  • Suriname is a popular first port of call for Dutch transAtlantic yachts (historically Suriname was a Dutch colony so Dutch is widely spoken), but yachts coming from Africa or Brazil also stop here and some yachts choose it as alternative place to spend the hurricane season.
  • Tourism is well developed in Suriname and facilities for yachts have improved in recent years. That said, Suriname does not have the yachting infrastructure like Trinidad or Grenada (where there is easy access to spares and expert repair facilities) and conditions are much more primitive.
  • Suriname’s economy has been in a steep recession since 2016 and prices for services have doubled. That said, things do appear to be improving and Suriname is still a lot cheaper than nearby countries.
  • Suriname has a flat coast, where most of the population live. Uplands rise up from the coastal plain and contain mineral reserves, while the coast is indented with six rivers. Some of the wide rivers are navigable for a considerable distance inland. See Publications page for a very useful cruising pilot.
  • The Suriname River is the place to enter the country as both Paramaribo (the capital) and Domburg lie on this river.
  • Travel in the country is generally trouble-free and exploring the unspoiled interior is a major reason for visiting this friendly country.
  • This is a multi-cultural country made up of Amerindians (the only original inhabitants), Maroons, Indians, Creoles, Indonesians, Dutch, Lebanese, a Jewish community and Chinese. Dutch and Sranang-Tongo, (a mixed language of all) are mostly spoken, however, English is understood everywhere.
