Kavieng - Provisions & Laundry

Oct 26, 2025

Best stores in town are Bisi Trading (Djaul Street) and Joe Tongs (corner of Djaul & Mongol Streets).

Bisi Trading has the best selection of western foods, mainly from Australia and New Zealand. You can place orders with Bisi by contacting Douglas Tsang on bisi@daltron.com.pg and they will deliver down to the waterfront for you. Or simply go into the store, choose off the shelf and ask one of the senior staff if they can arrange for a lift down to the waterfront. They are usually pretty accommodating.

Bisi Trading is the only place to purchase wine. Their bottle shop is just to the left of the main shop (the sign says Bia Stoa), and there is always more available than what you can see, so just ask. Sometimes they will let you come around into the store and cool room to see the whole selection, if you are after a lot. Or email Douglas for a current listing.

The best place for meat is Joe Tongs, and their bread is probably the best in town. Tongs are generally cheaper than Bisi, but Bisi has a wider selection.

Both have freezers with frozen beef, chicken, pork, and limited lamb cuts. JT’s has a fresh meat counter. They both have potatoes, yellow onions (expensive!) cabbage and occasional other veggies not found at the fresh markets. JT’s has a better choice of cheeses and dairy. Both sell eggs, but they are not always in stock. Non-refrigerated foods include Pasta sauces, dressings.

Markets

For fruit & vegetables, the Main Market is open every day except Sunday and Monday. Best days are Friday morning and Saturday morning, as growers from Lelet Plateau come down to sell their wares, providing a much broader selection. There is also more on offer by way of fresh fish and mud crabs on these two days.

It pays to go many days, as you may find, avocados, mangoes, beautiful head lettuce in abundance, huge mud crabs or carrots on one day and none the next.

Another market known as the Corner Market is open most afternoons from around 3 pm, and is located on the way out of town on the Boluminski Hwy near the end of the Kavieng Airport runway.
