Balboa - Transport & Travel

Apr 11, 2024

Albrook is the main transport hub, near the canal docks in Balboa and 4 miles from the marinas. Here there is access to the cheap and useful city metro system, the railway to Colon, the main bus terminal to everywhere and the airport for internal flights within Panama.

On first arrival you will need to take a taxi to the metro station ($8) or a bus ($0.35) to buy a pre-paid travel card. Walk over a long footbridge from the metro station to the shopping mall.

Buses

You can catch a bus from opposite the Flamenco Marina to Balboa. For other bus routes go to http://traveleater.net/panama-how-to-take-the-bus-if-you-dont-speak-spanish

Taxis

Uber tends to be cheaper than local taxis. Always determine the price with the driver beforehand. Ask the locals what the cost should be.

Access to Panama City and shopping from the Playita and Flamenco anchorages requires a taxi.

The trip to Tocumen International Airport (about 25km) takes about 45 minutes from Isla Flamenco.

The domestic airport at Albrook (Marco A. Gelabert Airport) offers services for commuter airlines to Colon and the interior. It is about 2km from Balboa.

Car Rental

NOTE - Rental cars cannot be taken across the border into Costa Rica. The new 4 lane interstate is open between Colon (Sabinitas) and Panama City. In general, the roads throughout Panama are good. You can get a better rate if you reserve a car online. You can also rent a GPS with digitized road maps.

Train

Taking the train back down the route of the canal is a hassle-free way to return to Colón. Catch a bus from Flamenco to the train station in Panama City.
