Where is Balboa?

Balboa is a district of Panama City, located at the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. This port is a known hurricane hole. Balboa has been said by many to be "cruiser-unfriendly" with regards to safe moorings. For those transiting the Canal from Colon and arriving in Balboa at 0300, this may well be true. Finding a mooring field or safe place to anchor in the dark is difficult here and the marinas are very expensive. If planning a canal transit, be sure to talk to cruisers about the best place to stop on the other side beforehand.

Balboa Entrance Notes and Cautions

Vessels entering the Bay of Panama from Costa Rica can get out of the opposing current found between Punta Mala and Panama by heading first to the Perlas Islands and then coming up on the current.

Remember the Pacific side of Panama has a tidal range of almost 20 feet. Check the tide when anchoring and be sure to let out enough chain. Easterlies can bring waves of up to 5 feet through the anchorage. The ground in most anchorages tends to be foul, so have a second anchor ready at all times.

Nowhere in Panama should yachts anchor at night in remote areas without being accompanied by other yachts. The latest incident occurred south of Taboga Island (7nm south of Balboa), a yacht anchored there alone was boarded by three armed men. See report here.
