Read Panama Formalities for detailed information on procedures for clearing into and out of Panama.
Cristobal Signal Station should be contacted on VHF Channels 12 or 16.
The boat will be directed to anchor at the designated yacht anchorage (within the 3 yellow markers close to the entrance of Shelter Bay Marina), or proceed directly to Shelter Bay Marina (VHF channel 74).
The well known yacht anchorage area (the Flats) is also available.
Shelter Bay Marina have Immigration and Port Captain on site Monday to Friday. There is no fee for clearing in here. It is possible to clear at the weekend for an additional charge of US$75. Inform the marina in advance if this is your intention so that arrangements can be made.
To speed up the process, you can get photocopies of all documentation and crew lists in the Dock Shop.
Cruising permits are not needed if just going through the canal, however, if staying more than 14 days in Panama then one should be applied for. The marina will process the application and deliver it when they get it back from the Port Authority in Colon.
In Shelter Bay contact the Marina Manager, Giovanni Gaudiano.
Immigration: Visit immigration to obtain your tourist visa.
Port Captain: Next the skipper should go to Cristóbal Autoridad Maritima de Panama to clear into Panama and obtain a cruising permit.
Clearance is completed at the Port Authority.
If you have already cleared into Panama, you will still need to visit the Port Captain's office with a copy of your Cruising Permit, a printed crew list (they have forms available if you don’t already have one), a copy of all crew passports, your Zarpe from the last Panamanian port and a copy of the boat’s registration document. Immigration will also want a copy of your crew list and passports. There should be no charge.
If intending to transit the Canal, see Procedures for a Handline Transit of the Panama Canal.
