Belize City - Docking

The anchorage at Belize City is an open roadstead, often rolly with very poor holding.

Cucumber Beach Marina is a full-service marina off the Western Highway, just south of the town. Whilst services at the marina are good, it is rather isolated. Entrance to the marina should only be attempted at high tide (see http://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Belize-City-Belize/tides/latest).

The other marinas around the city (Holiday Inn, Raddison and Princess) are all shallow and are relatively unprotected from the dangerous long rolling fetch. Although The Radisson Fort George Marina is useful for a shortstop for supplies etc.

Belize City is quite safe by day, although keep an eye out for pickpockets. Hold-ups and theft are regular events after dark, so use a taxi, even to travel short distances (make sure you confirm the price with the driver before you get in the car).

We anchored in front of the Raddison. While it certainly isn’t the best spot it was not as bad as the above sounds. We had to stay 3 nights in town and had up to 20 knots from N and E, still the swell was acceptable. One night the current was quite strong. I’d say – just watch out for the weather and have trusty anchor. Certainly not great for longer stays. What was most annoying though was that the pier is from the Raddison and they asked for 1 US$ per person per landing.

3 US$ per bag if you want to get rid of some trash. How strictly they enforce this depends on the person on watch. The good thing though – you won’t get your dinghy motor stolen.

Cucumber Beach Marina is a very nice gentle marina with helpful, friendly marina manager Miss Colette and her crew. There are laundry, WIFI, showers, a nice restaurant, and free swimming occasion. Too bad there is no supermarket close neither ATM machine. Maybe in the future, they will develop? Important to know is that you can only enter the Marina on high tide (http://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Belize-City-Belize/tides/latest).

Making good arrangements with the marina in advance and a good time schedule is therefore important. Anchoring your yacht in front of the marina is not a good idea: it is NOT in the lee, it is very rolly and in winds, more than 25 knots, big chance that the ground is not holding, is not in the lee, this could cause a very dangerous situation. Cucumber Beach Marina is a good place, though with these disadvantages in mind. Also in hurricane season, it is not a protected place.
