Belize City - Clearance

Recent reports indicate that yachts have had good experiences clearing in at Belize City. Clearance can be accomplished more rapidly if the Belize port captain is called in advance of arrival on VHF Channel 16. Flying the Q flag, one can either anchor off or use the dock at the Holiday Inn Hotel.

Officials will come to the dock and complete clearance there, without boarding the yacht, with formalities taking about 15 minutes. Fees total US$50 – $10 for the Sanitation department, and $10 each “taxi fare” for 4 officials. If anchored, a customs boat will usually come alongside and the officials will board the boat, but if not, the captain should go ashore to the customs office. In this case, the captain is usually accompanied back to the boat by a customs official for the necessary paperwork. The next office to be visited is immigration, which is in a town north of the police station. Customs Tel. 011-501-2-73510, immigration Tel. 011-501-8-22423. The Immigration office is open on a Sunday but there is a 40USD/hour overtime charge.

For clearing out at Belize City it is necessary to purchase two special clearance forms available from Angelus Press near the police station. The first office to be visited is the port authority, which is quite far and requires a taxi ride. A charge will be made depending on the tonnage of the yacht. Customs must be cleared next, and finally immigration.

For 2014 information about clearing in in Old Belize, at the Cucumber Beach Marina, see this report.

We anchored in front of the Raddison. While it certainly isn’t the best spot it was not as bad as the above sounds. We had to stay 3 nights in town and had up to 20 knots from N and E, still the swell was acceptable. One night the current was quite strong. I’d say – just watch out for the weather and have trusty anchor. Certainly not great for longer stays. What was most annoying though was that the pier is from the Raddison and they asked for 1 US$ per person per landing.

3 US$ per bag if you want to get rid of some trash. How strictly they enforce this depends on the person on watch. The good thing though – you won’t get your dinghy motor stolen.

Cucumber Beach Marina is a very nice gentle marina with helpful, friendly marina manager Miss Colette and her crew. There are laundry, WIFI, showers, a nice restaurant, and free swimming occasion. Too bad there is no supermarket close neither ATM machine. Maybe in the future, they will develop? Important to know is that you can only enter the Marina on high tide (http://www.tide-forecast.com/locations/Belize-City-Belize/tides/latest).

Making good arrangements with the marina in advance and a good time schedule is therefore important. Anchoring your yacht in front of the marina is not a good idea: it is NOT in the lee, it is very rolly and in winds, more than 25 knots, big chance that the ground is not holding, is not in the lee, this could cause a very dangerous situation. Cucumber Beach Marina is a good place, though with these disadvantages in mind. Also in hurricane season, it is not a protected place.
