Overall Crime and Safety

Crime in Vanuatu is low. Crime tends to increase in the lead-up to holidays such as Independence Day (30 July) and Christmas. Robberies, assaults and sexual assaults against foreigners do occur, including in their homes and on public transport, particularly in the capital Port Vila. Risks increase after dark, in isolated locations and if you're alone.

Cruisers who visited the country in July/August 2023 said their experience of Vanuatu was safer than anywhere in Europe and they never felt threatened in any way.

However they did advise to always lift and lock dinghies because they are high value items.  See the following report.

Check Australia's Smartraveller website and New Zealand's Smart Travel website for current warnings and advice.

Drug Trafficking

Following the seizure of a quantity of illicit drugs on board a yacht in Luganville in late August 2025, Vanuatu Police are urging locals to support drug law enforcement by reporting any suspicious yachts or maritime activity in their area to the nearest police station. Cruisers should be aware of this and avoid getting involved in anything illegal or behaving in a way that raises suspicion about their cruising activities.

Law enforcement agencies in the US, Australia and New Zealand have now clearly established the Pacific Ocean as a major transit area between narcotic-production from South America and one of its major new markets, Australia.  See this article from Radio New Zealand.
