Electricity

  • Voltage: 220 V

LPG

Thai gas bottles can be exchanged or bought, but not hired on deposit. Other gas bottles can be filled at depots in Krabi and Phuket (see ports pages for details), but most depots won't fill foreign bottles.

Boatyards and Repairs

  • Both repair and docking facilities have greatly improved in Phuket in recent years. Facilities in the other ports are more limited. More repair facilities are obviously available in the capital, Bangkok, but it is a busy polluted city, totally unsuitable for yachts.
  • If carrying out substantial repairs in Thailand, care should be taken to oversee all works. Whilst prices are very cheap here, often, unskilled labor is used by yards with little or no knowledge of yacht systems. Failure to supervise on your part could result in disastrous results.
  • See these useful reports for information about boatyards and boatyard practices in SE Asia.

Charts

Cruisers using Garmin and Navionics software with Google Earth overlay have reported inaccuracies in the digital maps in Thailand. It is recommended if relying on digital charts, to do a Google Earth overlay of a chart to ensure the coastline is correct, particularly if navigating near islands and at night.

Navigation:

Be cautious sailing at night as there are many fishing nets, they are numbered and the lines (only white buoys are visible at the surface) are sunken and could be 4 miles long across the water. The small lit frags are marked 10 meters apart. It is possible to sail through these, with care and engine in neutral. Fishing boats here seem to use green bright lights and do not follow any nautical rules.
