Thailand - Security

Dec 15, 2025

December 2025 Alert:  Cambodia has shut its border crossings with Thailand as fighting continues between the two countries, according to media reports.  Cruisers planning to sail in the Gulf of Thailand near Thailand's east coast should monitor the situation as this will no doubt affect ports as well.

Overall Crime and Safety in Thailand

Thailand is considered a safe destination for tourists. Violent crimes against tourists are relatively rare, and the majority of visits are trouble-free.

Specific areas of concern in Thailand:

  • Drive-by bag snatching by thieves on motorbikes is increasingly common, so in large towns be sure to only carry with you what you need for that day and put your phone and money in a pocket.
  • The police take drug-crime very seriously. If you are caught with drugs, you won't get off lightly.
  • Card skimming and fraud are common in Thailand.
  • Foreigners have been victims of a number of crimes that occurred at the all-night Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan and the area surrounding Haad Rin (assaults, robberies, muggings and sexual attacks). Many Thais from Bangkok do not visit the Samui archipelago because of its reputation.

Maritime Issues in Thailand:

Security reports from cruisers in Thailand are rare. Theft and attacks on yachts are few and far between, however, even here, burglaries, dinghy, and outboard theft do indeed happen. Cruisers are advised to treat their dinghy and outboard as they would their family car - lock it or lose it and put it in the garage (i.e. on davits our lifted out of the water) at night.

Cruisers that have fallen victim to crime in Thailand warn of the potential difficulties resulting from robberies: lengthy police interviews (days not hours); interpretation problems; "obviation fees"; immigration visas reissuing; obtaining passports overseas etc. These take up much more time, effort and worry than the original robbery.

Disturbing actions have been reported in the past about Thai fishing boats that appear to try to deliberately ram yachts.
