Where is Galle?

Galle is a small town on the southwestern tip of Sri Lanka and one of three Ports of Entry for the country. During the civil war that dragged on from 1986 to 2009, Galle harbor was considered the only safe place for visiting cruising yachts to clear into the country, however now Trincomalee on the NE coast and Colombo are considered safe ports for clearance.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for Galle:

Visiting yachts can only arrive into Galle during daylight hours and need to call the Harbour Master on VHF Channel 16 to obtain permission to enter.  It is possible to anchor just outside the harbour if arriving at night.

Cruiser Highlights for Galle:

The old Dutch Town part of the city is beautiful and worth visiting.  Fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables are available but most western items such as cereal, peanut butter and olive oil and expensive.  The people are very welcoming and friendly.

Do not miss the UNESCO heritage site of Galle Fort and visits to Sigiriya Rock and a train ride over the famous Nine Arches Bridge is recommended.
