Navigation:

  • Planned windfarms along the Portuguese coast can be seen here.
  • You will find alot of fishing nets and pots off the coast, particularly around harbor entrances. Most are reasonably well marked with flags, but some use only plastic containers.
  • Most harbors have a bar across the entrance, which can be dangerous when a swell is running, in particular if meeting with an ebbing tidal stream. One should not attempt to enter harbor in the wrong conditions.
  • Ports frequently close along the Portuguese coast due to dangerous conditions at the port entrance.  A black cylinder by day and all round green over red over green by night indicate that a port is closed. Closures may also be advised by radio or on NAVTEX.
  • If sailing from anywhere west of Faro to anywhere east of Faro, including Cadiz and the Strait of Gibraltar, watch out for tuna nets. They are marked by yellow special marks but are not very brightly lit.
  • Since 2020 orcas have been interacting with yachts under 15m off the western coast of the Iberian peninsula and even Brittany, France. Twice these interactions have resulted in such severe rudder damage that yachts have sunk. See the Orca page on Noonsite for details and resources for locating orcas and how to deal with interactions. Coastal warnings are published on NAVTEX when orca positions are reported [ANAVNET].
