Setubal - Docking

Dec 18, 2018

Approaches

On approach, keep to the buoyed channel. The marina is in the third basin, after which, there is 6 miles of commercial quays. Watch out for the ferries which also dock here.

Anchorages
At Setubal, in 13m SW of the fishing basin (the first basin).

Anchoring in front of 'Praia da Arbaquel' offers good protection from Northerlies but the ground can be foul and rocky. During the summer months there are moorings here administered by the local sailing club (+351-265 523 915). Anchored boats can also leave their dinghies here when going ashore.

There are various places to anchor within the estuary.

A shallow bay, Portinho da Arráriba, 1.5 nm NNW of the river entrance, in 2.5m. Should only be used in settled weather.

Anchoring behind the peninsula of Troia has very good holding but is pretty exposed so should only be used in settled weather. Facilities on the peninsula are limited but there's a big ferry that goes every half hour to Setubal (the smaller ferry from Troia marina is more expensive).

Marinas

The marina, adjacent to the town, is usually full of local boats and rarely has room for many visitors.

A better option is the new marina just 2nm away on the opposite bank, at Troia. It lies at the extreme northern tip of a long, thin peninsula. There is a regular ferry service to the town from the marina.
