Overall Crime and Safety

Mauritius is considered to be a safe country, but one in which petty crime such as pickpocketing, bag snatching and theft is common. Pickpockets are active in crowded markets downtown and other high tourist areas in Port Louis.

Specific Areas of Concern

  • Avoid walking alone after dark outside of hotel grounds and on the beaches. Do not trek or hike alone.
  • Ensure that your personal belongings, including your passport and other travel documents are secure at all times.
  • Avoid renting accommodation that is not registered with the Mauritius Tourism Authority.
  • Exercise caution when withdrawing money from ATMs, where robberies have occurred.
  • Prostitution and drug activity is prevalent in downtown Port Louis and in tourist areas after dark.
  • Terrorist attacks in Mauritius can’t be ruled out. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.
