Andaman Islands - Communications

Jun 09, 2023

Telephone:

It is illegal to use most types of satellite phone while in the Andaman Sea and in Indian territorial waters. Such communications are monitored and can result in severe penalties, even imprisonment.

On arrival in the Andamans, if you have an Iridium or Thuraya phone on board, it will be bonded (with tape and a box you supply) until your departure.

The exception is the Inmarsat satellite network, which is allowed. However, reports from cruisers in February 2019 stated that Inmarsat did not work as the signal is blocked in India.

The only solution, in order to report your position to the authorities is to buy a local SIM card (which limits you to where you can get mobile reception, predominantly on the main Islands).

Internet:

There are a several internet cafes in Port Blair and it has mobile phone coverage. Internet is generally slow.

The main post office is about 1km south of Aberdeen Bazaar in Port Blair.

At Havelelock Island there is a modern looking internet cafe near the fruit and veg market (315rp/hr).

At Hut Bay, Little Andaman Island the senior school has internet available 1600:1700 Mon - Fri.
