Baskets are a local product of Gabe's, clearly reflected in the many variations for sale in the market area in the modern town. Few of them are designed for tourist purposes — Gabes doesn't see the large numbers of foreign visitors — which make them more of a true souvenir.
The town's vast surrounding oasis and villages can be explored by caleche horse-carriage, while at nearby Matmata, the lunar landscapes and troglodyte village were scenes from the film Star Wars.
The nearby village of El Aouadid has a crocodile farm, open for visitors.
