Sweden - Yachting Essentials

Oct 12, 2025

Electricity:

  • Voltage: 230 V
  • Frequency: 50 Hz

Electric contacts used in Swedish harbours are the blue or the ordinary adapters which can be bought from any Swedish marine shop.

Fuel:

Diesel at marine fuel stations does not contain biodiesel.

Fuel is widely available.

LPG:

LPG is available in bottles 2, 5 and 10 kg with screw on valves. Containers can only be filled with the proper adaptor and this can only be done in some of the major towns. Camping gas exchange bottles are very expensive.

Flag Etiquette:

From March 1 to October 31, the national flag should be hoisted at sunrise not earlier than 0800, rest of the year at 0900. The flag should be lowered at sunset, at the latest 2100.

When sailing in Swedish waters, visitors are expected to fly a courtesy flag under the starboard spreader. On a motorboat it should be on a pole.

A pennant can be flown around the clock, but not simultaneously with the flag.

Navigational Hazards:

All Notices to mariners and Navigational warnings are published on the Norwegian Maritime Administration web page.

Vertical clearances for fixed bridges are shown on the charts. Opening times vary and must be checked for each opening bridge. Cable ferries are still in operation.

Military protected areas are marked with noticeboards on beaches, also on sea charts.

Nature protection areas are marked on sea charts as well as with notice boards on the beaches. Time for access is shown both on charts and noticeboards.

Black Water Waste:

All boats with a toilet must have a holding tank and must be pumped ashore or in tanks or outside 12NM.

Marinas are responsible for ensuring that there are adequate facilities for boat owners to dispose of this waste on land.

Most Swedish ports use a conical nozzle which fits most deck pump out fittings.

A map showing the location of pump out stations can be found on the Swedish Transport Agency website.

Anyone caught not complying with these requirements may face an on-the-spot fine.

Docking/Marinas:

Pre-booking at Swedish harbors is not common place.

Most marinas provide winter storage.

Provisioning:

Provisioning is easy everywhere, with the exception of the more remote areas, and in many places it is possible to come alongside a dock close to a grocery store.
