Rabaul Docking:
Simpson Harbour is one of the best havens in PNG, but due to volcanic activity, it is advisable to enter in daylight. The Yacht Club has a number of moorings available for visitors.
Cruisers report that security precautions should be maintained wherever you anchor, including using floodlights on deck and motion sensors.
Duke of York Islands:
The Duke of York Islands, just a few hours sail away from Rabaul close to Kokopo, have several good anchorages, with local villagers keen to ensure the safety of their island group for traveling yachts. Plus, there are several good resorts here that provide secure anchorage and others moorings for cruisers.
The anchorage next to Mioko Island is reported to be a near geographically perfect anchorage. Anchor in sand in 5m with full protection in all directions from wave and swell and with a stern tie to the beach. The village here is very pretty with houses surrounded by flowers. Simon and his three sons run a local guest house and will likely be on the beach to guide you in. Simon and his wife speak excellent English. They can provide 24hr security for a small fee.
Contact Simon's son Manuel on WhatsApp +675 7111 4635 in advance to make arrangements. They offer a range of tourist services including transfers to the mainland and a dolphin tour.
Caution: Negotiate anchoring fees at Mioko Island with caution. A lone Japanese yachtsman was charged 600 Kina for 2 days at anchor (approx. USD$150) in February 2025, even though he negotiated a price of 50 Kina (USD$12) per day.
