Where is Kieta?

Kieta is a coastal town located in the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB), Papua New Guinea. Nestled on the east coast of Bougainville Island, Kieta provides a sheltered anchorage and access to the nearby Arawa township.

Cruiser Highlights for Kieta

While Bougainville has had a chequered history, cruisers who visited in 2025 report a friendly welcome.  A short drive from Kieta is Arawa which was once the capital of Bougainville and serves as a bustling hub today, with lively markets, friendly locals, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Further inland lies Panguna, home to the famous Panguna Mine, which was once one of the largest open-pit copper mines in the world.

Kieta is also a gateway to the rest of Bougainville Island, making it a perfect base for those eager to explore the island’s rainforests, coastal trails, and unique history.
