New Zealand - Security

Dec 05, 2025

Overall Crime and Safety:

New Zealand is a very safe country to visit. Burglary and harassment are the most common crimes.

Theft targeting tourists does occur, the majority of incidents being car break-ins when parked. Therefore, if you are renting a vehicle to explore the country, ensure you either take your cash and important documents with you or ensure they are placed out of sight.

If you are the victim of any crime, report the incident to the local police immediately. New Zealand's General Info/Emergencies section contains a list of emergency numbers.

Specific Areas of Concern:

The areas of highest crime (assault and robbery) are Auckland’s central business district, downtown Wellington and Hamilton’s inner city.
