Greymouth is the commercial centre for the west coast region of South Island. A useful stopping off point for exploring the Southern Alps and their spectacular glaciers.

Spectacular views of the port entrance, coastline and the Southern Alps can be had from the breakwaters, which are accessed from Blaketown or Cobden.
