New Caledonia Security for Yachts

A state of emergency was imposed in May 2024 following deadly unrest in the archipelago by indigenous people who have long sought independence. The state of emergency has been lifted and the situation in New Caledonia has gradually improved and yachts are again visiting. The tourism sector is adapting to the challenging economic situation. Isolated local population unrest remains a possibility.

  • Alcohol sales in shops, especially on weekends, may be restricted.
  • Some localised disturbances may still occur, follow the advice of local authorities and marinas.

Overall Crime and Safety

Generally speaking, New Caledonia is a very safe tourist destination. However, due to political tensions, some travel websites are advising visitors to continue to exercise a high degree of caution in Noumea and western coastal areas between Kone and Noumea. Australia's Smartraveller website continues to advise about travel to other parts of the country, including Loyalty islands and IIes de Pins and inland of the western coastal areas on Grand Terre, including on some major roads.

Political tensions and civil unrest may increase at short notice. Demonstrations and protests may turn violent at short notice. Avoid demonstrations and public gatherings. There’s still a high police and security presence in country.

Specific areas of concern

Prony Bay is reported to be dangerous because of problems regarding the nickel mine. One local boat has been attacked by people living in this area.

Maritime Issues

Due to the presence of bull sharks in the beaches around Noumea and the offshore islands, there is often a bathing ban in place. Some people have been bitten and one person died, so take care to be aware of the current situation before entering the water in this area. Bull sharks hunt in shallow water and often mistake people for food.
