Hienghène is on the NE coast of Grande Terre, New Caledonia. This is a rugged coastline with incredible rock formations, many resembling well-known icons such as the "Nesting Chicken," la poule couveuse and the sphinx that form the headlands of the Hienghène harbor.
The bay is wide and offers a number of anchoring options, but there are shallow patches. The river entrance requires careful navigation as the shallow bar and winding channel have only 1.5 to 2 meters of water at low tide, so time your approach for the rising tide.
Visiting Hienghène by boat is an off-the-beaten-track experience. You can anchor in the bay (off the village in the shelter of rock formations) or negotiate the shallow river bar to use the Marina de Hienghène. Several shops and cafes offer a selection of fresh, fruit and vegetables, coffee and bread.
