Ilha de Mozambique - Customs

Jan 20, 2023

Description:

Ilha de Mozambique is an island in the Nampula Province in Northern Mozambique. Just 3km long and very narrow, the island is connected to the mainland by a concrete bridge. Most of its inhabitants live in Macuti Town.

Stone Town occupies the northern half of the island and is much grander than Macuti town in the south, but both are UNESCO listed because of their significant architecture and cultural tradition.

Ilha de Mozambique was the capital of Mozambique for nearly four centuries under the Portuguese (the capital is now Maputo) and had been a base for Arab traders since the 8th century.

Cruiser Highlights:  This island is the only place in Mozambique that has had consistent good reports from visiting cruisers who have reported that the port captain has been very helpful to visiting yachts.  See Latest Reports for more information.

Location: 15° 01.78' S, 40° 44.21'  E (anchorage)
