Madagascar Security

Military Coup - change of Government

  • Significant protests took place in Antananarivo and other parts of Madagascar in late September and early October 2025, including incidences of violence and looting.
  • A group within the military announced on 14 October that it had taken control, and an interim President was invested on 17 October.
  • This appears to have been widely welcomed, and the situation is now calm.
  • Contacts on the ground in Nosy Be, want to reassure cruisers that yachts are currently stopping here and the situation is stable and safe.
  • Follow local advice and avoid all large gatherings and political demonstrations.
  • For real-time information and community support, refer to the Sail to South Africa WhatsApp Group.

Overall Crime and Safety

The overall crime rate in Madagascar is lower than many other African countries.  However, in recent years there has been a rise in crime, particularly muggings and robberies. It's important to note that these crimes not only occur in urban areas but also in nature reserves and beaches.

Specific areas of concern

There has been an increase in violence, including armed robberies, around the capital, Antananarivo and southern districts of Toliara and Fianarantsoa provinces. If you plan to travel to these areas, you may want to consider hiring a reputable guide.

There have been attacks on tourists visiting the National Parks Montagne d’Ambre and Ankarana.

Take particular care on beaches and avoid visiting them alone.

Take great care and follow local advice in the south of the country. In the southern triangle between Ihosy, Toliara/Tuléar and Fort-Dauphin the security situation remains tense and the roads are in very poor condition. There have been several attacks on vehicles. It is not advisable to to travel by taxi-brousse (bush taxi).

Maritime Issues

Theft is a problem here, as in many places, and care must be taken to protect dinghies, outboards and personal belongings.
