Calling abroad from Riga: To call the rest of the world simply dial 00, followed by the country code and number. The country code for Estonia is 372. The code for Lithuania is 370. To book overseas calls, dial 115. Operators speak rudimentary English.

Calling local numbers while in Riga: Just dial the seven-digit number as it is, xxx-xxxx; to call mobile phones, dial 9xx-xxxx or 6xx-xxxx.

Calling other parts of Latvia: This is very simple now, since area codes are incorporated into regular telephone numbers, so you dial any number as it is.

If you need to make phone calls from a pay phone, you should purchase a Lattelekom phone card, available at newspaper kiosks, post offices and some stores. There are two types of cards, and two types of pay phones. So, unfortunately, after you've bought your card, you also need to match it with the right pay phone.

The main Riga post office is at Brivibas 19 (G-3); tel. 701-8738. Open: Monday - Friday 07:00-23:00; Saturday and Sunday 08:00-22:00

There are also post offices at Stacijas 1 (D-4), tel. 701-8804; and at Elizabetes 41/43 (B-4), tel. 733-1609.

Sending a standard letter within Europe costs about 30 santims; 40 santims to the U.S.
