Probably because this is a commercial port and does not cater for pleasure yachts, charges are significantly higher here for clearance than in other Guatemala ports of entry.
Port Control should be contacted on VHF Channel 16 for instruction on where to berth for clearance. You need to contact Port Control at the sea buoy to get permission to enter.
It is possible to undertake all clearance procedures at your berth in the marina. Immigration, Customs and the Port Captain will visit your boat.
Latest reported fees here for clearing in were $280, including customs, immigration and port captain’s charges. Clearing out costs a further $100, and if you want the marina to assist with the paperwork, it’s another $50.
Payment in cash – a receipt will be given.

The marina fee for our 37ft boat for 4 days, including electricity was $170. The rates are not published anywhere that we could find.

This is a commercial port and yachts are not catered for, although all the people we met were very friendly and helpful. The surge in the marina is very bad and you should choose to tie up to an inside pontoon wih the wind blowing you away from the dock, as the rolling and surge is so bad it would be easy for the deck to get caught under the pontoon and cause damage. There is a nice restaurant but no separate showers or toilets for cruisers. There is water, electricity and wi-fi.
The town is very basic, but there is a very good supermarket (La Torre) in San Jose town, but it is a long, dusty walk of about 2 miles each way. It cost us $280 to check in, including customs, immigration and port captain’s charges. Checking out, only four days later, cost a further $100 plus $50 charged by the marina for helping with the paperwork. Outrageous charges which probably make it pointless for most cruisers to consider coming here.
