Faroes Weather for Sailors

The Faroe Islands are located on the edge of the Arctic where the warm Gulf Stream meets the cold streams of Arctic waters. The variations in altitude, currents and wind makes for unpredictable and changeable weather and you can easily experience rain, snow and sun in one day.

The weather is often unsettled and visibility is frequently poor when the land may be obscured by fog or drizzle. The incidence of summer gales is similar to other places on the West European seaboard. Sudden squalls may be experienced inside the fjords. In the summer months, the long daylight hours may be enjoyed, the weather is fairly mild due to the Gulf Stream and winds are often light.

Bear in mind that the weather can change instantly and that sailing conditions can quickly become hazardous because of sudden fog or wind.
