Luperon - Transport & Travel

Mar 13, 2024

Puerto Plata International Airport is about an hour away. A cab ride costs about $40.

If you wish to travel into Puerto Plata (food shopping, sightseeing), Imbert (ATMs, Thursday market) or beyond, you can travel either by Guah-guah (cheapest but not necessarily comfortable) or taxi (much more pricey).

The Guah-guah (mini-van) prices are posted inside the van, 45 pesos will get you to Imbert. Taxis (cars) will also operate at guah-guah prices, however, you must make it clear with the driver that you are not going "solo". As many as 7 people can be crammed into a taxi when operating as a guah-guah.

A taxi to Puerto Plata (1.5 hours)and back should cost in the region of US$40 return.

There is a coach to Santo Domingo from Imbert and a simpler service direct from Luperon.

Car rental is possible in Luperon but the safety of some cars has been known to be dubious and you must be fully insured.  Also the standard of driving in the DR is not the best and there are many motorbikes, often with 2-3 people on board, and no-one wearing a helmet.

Motorbike hire is also possible.
