Barahona - Docking

Anchor in the tranquil mangrove anchorage at the northeast corner of the small basin at the end of the well-marked commercial channel. Mud bottom. Dinghies can be parked at the “yacht club”.

Anchorages:

There are three apparent anchorages in the port basin:

  • The best is in the tranquil mangrove anchorage at the northeast corner of the small basin at the end of the well-marked commercial channel – by the “Club Nautico”. Dinghies can be left at the club. The only downside is the straight edged shoreline to the north which is a berth for ships delivering coal to the power station.  You may have to leave this anchorage if a big ship comes in. Lots of mosquitos according to cruiser reports.
  • The second option is to the north of the commercial pier. This is near the Armada building and is where they would like you to anchor, however, tends to be more exposed and subject to swell.  Fewer mosquitos here and out of reach for the Sargassum weed
  • The third option is to the south among the reefs off Pta los Ingleses. The water is smooth behind the reefs.

Docking:

It is possible to tie up to the commercial pier jutting out from the town in the southwest corner. There is a charge for this however for a minimum of 24 hours, so only dock if you are willing to pay.

    Data Entry2 says:

We anchored at the little harbour in front of the little yacht club (that’s really stretching the term). The anchorage was calm, and the holding was good.

You can dinghy to the govt pier from there and access the town. If your dinghy to the yacht club be prepared to pay 10USD. Although we did at one point in our two-day stay go to the marina to move fuel via jugs to the boats and had ‘presidents’ in between. other than that there is really no need to go to the yacht club.

Look for a guy named Fernando. He was a great guide. He took us all over the town, to markets, cell phone stores, restaurants, and negotiated for diesel to be brought to the yacht club for us. He was great and made us feel safe in a very busy downtown environment. Be prepared to be patient on your way out of this town to other stops.
