Chile - Yachting Essentials

Dec 17, 2025

Electricity:

  • Voltage: 220 V
  • Frequency: 50 Hz

Solar Panels: During summer, in the semi-arid regions east of the Andes, there is plenty of sun. During the winter you may struggle to get all the solar you need. It tends to rains a lot in the channels in the summer, so sun there could be an issue.

Water:

While the majority of marinas have potable water at the dock, some may have a limited water supply and request that you do not use the water for cleaning the boat.

LPG/Propane:

This is difficult to find.

Cruisers with Aus/NZ/US/Can bottles (all have the same fittings) have been successful in getting refills in a number of ports (Puerto Montt, Antofagasta, Puerto Williams and Awolplast, Valdivia) however only with large commercial size bottles. That fitting is not used on smaller bottles.

Many cruisers use the process of decanting gas from a Chilean tank, but this procedure is now forbidden in all marinas. The only solution is to speak with the marina/yacht club and see if they have someone who can take bottles to the local depot for filling.

Local depot filling is possible in Puerto Montt via the Club Nautico, but is expensive.

Equipment:

If cruising the channels you will need a set of long floating shorelines.
