The largest shopping mall in Brunei is the recently completed Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB). This fully modernized shopping arcade houses everything from branded clothes shops to children’s toys, complete with a large supermarket below its ground floor, not to mention a good selection of coffee shops and restaurants. Conveniently located below the Yayasan SHHB, is a large underground car park facility giving easy access to the complex.

There are large modern departments stores, local markets, and small roadside stalls where bargaining is commonly practiced. There is a lot of local, regional and overseas food. Fresh meat, vegetables, and fruits are airfreighted direct from Australia. Malaysians from nearby Miri, Limbang and Labuan come to Brunei to buy this fresh fruit and vegetables.

A full range of consumer goods is available, although the low volume traded means prices a more expensive than neighbors; prices are about equivalent to Singapore.

Shopping centers that are available in Brunei are:

  • Hua Ho Department Store,Jalan Gadong, Bandar Seri Begawan;
  • Milimewah Department Store ( Seria ), Seria;
  • Tiong Hin Superstore, Jalan Muara, Bandar Seri Begawan;

    Mobile Communications – an update:
    A new competitor, Progresif offers unlimited plans and cheaper rates (although 4x price than in Malaysia) but the speed was very low at Kota Batu RBYC so the unlimited did not really justify the 25Bn/week visitors plan and the 1Gb/week visitor plan lasted less than 1 day using smart phone to navigate in town! Coverage might be not as extensive as the original provider company. So perhaps best is to just use the wifi at the RBYC included in the 5B$ daily temporary cruiser membership including use of facilities, dock, washing machine!

    The new bridge at Sg Kabun, just before Bandar Seri Begawan, has a clearance height of approx 16m in the centre at high water.

    Following incidents of yachts anchoring mid-stream and without anchor lights in the Bandar Seri Begawan town area , the Marine Department no longer permits yachts to anchor upstream of the RBYC Kota Batu premises.

    When anchoring at RBYC (Kota Batu) be sure to stay to the side, out of the central navigation channel, and use anchor lights at night.
