Pemba - Facts

May 10, 2018

Description:

Located about 120nm south of the border with Tanzania in the northern section of the country.

Cruiser Highlights:

This popular tourist port occupies the peninsula on the southern shore of the entrance to Baie de Pemba. Much of its popularity is due to the fact that there is a coral reef close to the shore and the town contains an interesting local market selling silverware as well as local crafts. Whale watching here in September is a spectacular show.

Entrance Notes and Cautions:

Insurgents have occupied the area north of Pemba and there is on-going fighting and attacks (September 2020). This area should be avoided as the situation may escalate very quickly and there is no military presence. It is recommended to stay away from Mozambique shores including the bolt hole of Bazaruto Island.

Position:

12° 58.147' S, 40° 32.432' E (anchorage)
