The anchorage has a good holding in clear water in sand and it’s protected from the swell by the reef. The primary anchorage is located behind Protestant Cay in 10-foot depths, but you can also drop the hook on the east side of the harbor when space is tight. Be aware if you do anchor on the east side the anchorage is known to be quite rolly when there is a northerly swell.
Free public moorings are available for vessels under 60 feet in length for day use only and do not require a permit. The moorings on St. Croix can be white, yellow or orange. Public moorings are not intended for overnight use.
All other moorings require a permit from the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR).
Dinghies may be docked along the boardwalk.
Dinghies are a particularly attractive target so be sure to lift and secure your dinghy and outboard at all times.
See our USVI Security page for more information and this CSSN report which details three dinghy thefts in one night from the Christiansted anchorage in December 2023.
There are a variety of small docks including the Christiansted boardwalk public pier as well as full-service marinas in this area.
