  • Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a territory of France, located in the North Atlantic Ocean 24 km (15 miles) off the south coast of Newfoundland.
  • The main islands of the small archipelago are Saint Pierre, Miquelon (Grande Miquelon) and Langlade (Petite Miquelon), the latter two connected by a sandy isthmus.
  • The majority of the population live on Saint-Pierre and this island has the principal port and most repair services.
  • Tourism is becoming increasingly important as the traditional fishing industry declines due to overfishing, limitations on fishing areas and a ban on cod fishing imposed by the Canadian government.
  • Saint Pierre and Miquelon relies on France for subsidies and Canada for goods and transport links
