The "go to places" on the island for cruisers are Ann's Place (in the Castle Gardens), the Yacht Club (on the wharf) and the Tourist Office (in Jamestown). If you need assistance with anything, they should be able to help.
Water
There are drinking water taps/faucets located within 10 meters of the wharf landing. The tap at the top of the steps has a hose which makes it quick and easy for filling water jugs. The water is free (part of your port dues), though if the island is in a drought during your visit, small charges may be enacted for water.
Fuel
Petrol can be purchased for £1.37/litre and diesel can be purchased for £1.45/litre.
The island also has vehicle service stations.
Garbage Disposal
Bins are located at the Jamestown wharf.
Provisions
Buy everything you want and need before coming to the island. St. Helena is remote and the price of goods can be expensive and often double or more from your last port of call. Availability of items is also very limited. Everything comes to the island by supply ship which can sometimes be delayed weeks. Fresh produce is in great demand and whatever appears in the shops (produced by the few farmers there are on the island) get snapped up very quickly in the morning. Be early or that produce will be gone! Check in stores that don’t look like they would ever sell produce and you will be surprised at what you can find. Some restaurants will also sell extra produce, so don’t be afraid to ask anyone and everyone where things can be found.
See the Money section for information on the St. Helena Tourist Card App, which can save you a lot of money.
Repairs and Replacements
It is possible to get a short-term haul-out in an emergency. See Repair Facilities for more details. The island has many local boat owners who repair their own boats, as well as experienced mechanics, so repairs should be able to be handled without too much delay (including sail repair and refrigeration). The Yacht Club can also provide assistance in finding replacement parts.
Bringing in Parts and Spares
Airlink fly to St Helena fortnightly between Johannesburg and St Helena and there is monthly inter-Island service with Ascension Island, so it may be possible to arrange to fly in spares in an emergency.
The last reported cost of airfreight airport-to-airport (pre-pandemic) was £4.20/kg – however shipping/freight forwarding agents will apply additional costs to this, so customers should expect to pay somewhere about £4.20/kg.
Dangerous goods are charged at a higher rate. Customers are advised to check with the shipper/agent about preparation of necessary documents such as airway bills and customs declarations.
Freight Charges
The March 2020 Airlink rates for airfreight from South Africa were ZAR595 for all packages 18kg and under; and ZAR 30.47/kg for any packages larger than 18kg. Shipping/freight forwarding agents will apply additions costs to those charges.
Agents
The main shipping/freight forwarding agents operating with St Helena are currently:
