Nov 07, 2024

Where is Munda?

Munda is located just south of Noro, on New Georgia's NW (southern) coast, in the picturesque Roviana Lagoon.

Munda was the Japanese base on New Georgia Island during World War II, eventually overrun by American forces on 5 August 1943.

Munda Entrance Notes & Cautions

  • There are no detailed charts for Roviana Lagoon, but Dirk Sieling’s Solomon Islands Cruising Guide has good mud maps for getting around.
  • Most of the reef markers are in place, but it is recommended to keep a good watch in good visibility.

Munda Cruiser Highlights

Small, yet pleasant town; adequate services and some parts for yachts available; good provisioning; choice of bars and restaurants; protected anchorage; international airport with direct weekly flights to Brisbane and daily flights to Honiara; World War II Museum.
