Picton - Docking

Jan 25, 2024

There are two marinas in Picton harbour - Picton Marina and Waikawa Marina.

The bay at Waikawa also provides plenty of sheltered anchorages.

Although only about 15km directly west of Picton, Havelock is very many miles by sea, but it also provides excellent shelter in the marina there.

Marlborough Marine Industries Association comprises a group of marine-related businesses keen to offer their services to the world cruising community as well as local sailors. The local port authority is involved and will also assist in arranging marina berths and customs clearance.

Anchoring:

The Marlborough Sounds is a large area and has many splendid islands and anchorages to explore.

Anchoring in the Marlborough/Pelorus Sounds area is challenging with deep and steep anchorages, however if you set your anchor and reverse in to the shore with stern lines in to the bush you can tuck yourself in to the shoreline and stop your vessel swinging and unsetting your anchor. It is recommended to carry at least 100m of floating brightly coloured stretchy lines for this purpose.

There are three regional cruising clubs that install and maintain moorings (with a reciprocal arrangement), but use of them is restricted to club members: Pelorus Boating Club; Waikawa Boating Club; and Mana Cruising Club. If planning to cruise the area(s), short-term membership is advisable. Find out more at the Marlborough Sounds Cruise Guide.
