Where are the Chatham Islands?

This group of Islands lies approximately 350NM east of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island. It is mainly visited by people interested in its ecology and approximately 600 people live on the Islands. Locals refer to themselves as "Wekas".

The largest island in the group is Chatham Island, where Port Waitangi (the largest town) is located. Quite unlike the mainland, people compare the Islands to Newfoundland.

The island has a fascinating history and is completely different from anywhere else in New Zealand. The Moriori history is very interesting and a dramatic contrast to the culture of the Maori, despite both people’s having originally arrived from Raiatea.

Entrance Notes and Cautions for the Chatham Islands

  • Keep a good lookout for cray pots, which are set in up to 50m of water. All the coastline is taken up with fishing buoys, often much further out than you would expect.
  • The main anchorage in Port Waitangi is not protected from the N, NW, so keep an eye on the daily weather forecast and be prepared to move to more protected bays nearby should the weather dictate.
  • Swimming is not safe due to sharks. Local dive operations carry underwater flares and rifles for protection.
