The local currency is the Jordanian Dinar (JD), also pronounced as “jaydee.”

Import/export of foreign currency is unrestricted provided it is declared.  Export of JD limited to JD 300.  Israeli currency is prohibited.

Currency can be exchanged at major banks, exchange booths and at most hotels. Street money-changers are best avoided.

Credit cards (American Express, Visa, Diners Club, and MasterCard) are accepted at hotels, restaurants and larger shops.

Note: many smaller shops still prefer cash payment in the Jordanian currency, and it’s essential for shopping in the local souks.

Cash machines are available throughout Amman and in other major towns and cities. ATMs are less widely available in rural areas, though most petrol stations on major roads offer ATMs.
