Yap is one of the four states of the Federated States of Micronesia, a group of islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It is located in the westernmost portion of the country with Palau to the southwest, Guam to the north, and Chuuk State to the east.
Yap State is made up of the main island of Yap, plus 19 outer islands and atolls.
Yap Proper, consisting of 13 islands within a reef, is the centre of the state. It is the most intriguing island in Micronesia and is peopled by one of the most distinctive cultures in the Pacific. Dance is an art form in Yap through which history and legends are passed down the generations. The dances are raucous, colorful and well- orchestrated and the children are taught them from an early age. The islands' famed stone money and stone paths are beautifully preserved.
