Description:
Picton is a small seaport at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island. It is in an area known as the Marlborough Sounds, which is a popular cruising ground for kiwi sailors.
Cruiser Highlights:
There are well stocked supermarkets, a variety of tourist shops, cafes and restaurants as well as a medical centre and pharmacy in the town.
Waikawa Marina has a haulout yard and is well serviced by marine businesses and chandleries should you need any repairs.
There are many isolated coves, bays and islands to explore throughout the area as well as one of the world's most famous wine-growing regions.
Entrance Notes and Cautions:
Picton is the home of the inter-island ferries which travel daily between Wellington and Picton via the Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound. Please give way to these ferries as they travel at speed through the Sounds.
There are also numerous aquaculture activities throughout the Sounds so keep a lookout. Some areas are very deep and other areas very tidal so make sure you know where you are anchoring.
Position:
41° 17.17′S, 174° 00.47′E (Waikawa marina entrance)
